I have no idea why this isn't being covered wider today - CNN has had some tidbits, but nothing on their site. This has been going on for about 15 hours now. Details still remain murky - even on the Russian websites. There's a rumor floating around that the head of Chechen Resistance Shamil Basayev was among the attackers and has been killed. This is just another demonstration that no progress is being made in the global war in terror - many governments are eager to use it as a political excuse for their incompetence, but nothing is being done to address root causes, be it in Chechnya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, or elsewhere.
NALCHIK, Russia - Scores of Islamic militants launched simultaneous attacks on police and government buildings in this city in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region Thursday, sparking battles that killed at least 49 people.
Chechen rebels claimed responsibility for the attacks, which forced the evacuation of schools and left corpses littering the streets of Nalchik, the capital of the republic of Kabardino-Balkariya.
